The Simple Version

We care about your privacy. We only collect the data we need to make Hanashi work great for you. We never sell your data. We use OpenAI (to power AI conversations) and PostHog (to understand how you use the app so we can improve it). Your data is stored securely and you can delete it anytime.

Hanashi is an AI-powered Japanese language learning app created by Hanashi, a company incorporated in Ireland. We're passionate about helping people learn Japanese through natural conversation practice.

2. What Information We Collect

To provide you with the best learning experience, we collect:

Voice recordings you choose to send in AI chat
Text transcriptions generated from those recordings
Conversation content and context needed to generate AI replies
Learning progress (vocabulary, lesson completion, and skill improvements)
Account information (email and subscription details)
App usage analytics

You can choose not to allow AI data sharing. If you do not allow it, AI chat features that require third-party processing will not be available.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

Provide AI-powered conversation practice and generate AI responses
Process your voice input and transcriptions for chat functionality
Track learning progress and personalize your experience
Improve app performance, reliability, and features
Process subscriptions and provide account support

4. Sharing Your Information

We never sell your personal information. Here's who we share data with:

OpenAI (third-party AI service provider)

Data shared: voice recordings, transcriptions, and conversation context you submit in AI chat
Purpose: to process your requests and generate AI responses
Legal basis in app flow: we ask for your permission before sending this data to OpenAI
Control: you can decline permission, in which case AI chat features requiring OpenAI are disabled

PostHog (analytics provider)

Data shared: app usage analytics and feature interaction events
Purpose: product analytics and service improvement

Apple
For iOS purchases/refunds, we may share limited purchase/consumption data with Apple as required for refund processing.

We require third-party providers to protect data and process it in line with applicable privacy and security obligations.

We take security seriously. Your data is encrypted and stored securely using industry-standard practices. We regularly review our security measures to keep your information safe.

6. App Store Information

Hanashi is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. When you download or purchase the app through these stores, they may collect additional information according to their own privacy policies. We don't control what information they collect.

7. Your Rights and Choices

You can:

Access, update, export, or delete your account data
Withdraw AI data-sharing consent at any time in app settings (this disables AI chat features that require third-party processing)

8. Children's Privacy

Hanashi is suitable for learners of all ages. If you're under 13, please make sure your parents are okay with you using the app. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know through the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top will always show when we last made changes.
